Four Tips on Living Well With Chronic Pain

Suffering from chronic pain can be incredibly isolating and frustrating. Visiting doctor after doctor can leave you feeling as if there is no treatment for your pain. If you or a loved one is suffering from chronic pain, Pain-Wise can be a first step to understanding treatments that can help manage pain. Here are four tips on how to live well with chronic pain:

Choose the right physician. Many different types of physicians may call themselves pain management doctors, but there are more highly skilled and trained physicians who practice the subspecialty of interventional pain management. They are experts at diagnosing and treating chronic pain.

Become an active participant in your own care. You must be knowledgable about your choices. Finding a doctor or a medicine that will fit your needs requires research. It is important for you to understand the differences among treatments so you can select the best one for you.

Keep your doctor informed. Make your doctor aware of all of the medications you take and of any previous procedures. Once your doctor prescribes a medication or performs a procedure, keep them updated on the changed you notice so they can help you to the best of their ability.

Try a variety of things. A variety of medications can be used to treat chronic pain. There are pills, injections, minimally invasive procedures, and more. If one method doesn’t work for you, don’t get discouraged; there are many options and chances to find something that does work.

Written by three doctors with years of experience in pain management, Pain-Wise is a patient’s guide to simplifying the confusing and often overwhelming process of finding treatment for chronic pain. It will teach you the basics of how pain works, explain different interventional pain therapies in layman’s terms, and help you find a doctor that can manage, and potentially relieve, your chronic suffering.
